Game Development – Playing with Unity3d and Love2d

Game development has been a hobby of mine since 6th grade.  In fact, I completed my first scrolling shooter using Game Maker in 7th grade.  From there I took a C++ course online, got a job in web development (working in .NET), and have lived perpetually derailed since then.  I still like game development though.  It scratches a very different creative itch than writing does.  There is more puzzle to it and a visual aspect I like.  Sure, I’m not much of an artist.  Ok, so I’m a terrible artist — exhibit A – but that doesn’t mean I don’t like trying from time to time.

The “Candy Crush Saga” Saga

Recently, one of the worst offenders of “pay-to-win,” “freemium,” knockoffs took word mincing to a whole new level.  It wasn’t enough that they named their matching colors puzzle a “saga.”  They also decided that no other game will ever be a saga. Nor will any other game feature candy.  The company who ripped off Bejeweled and about a dozen other games decided that no ripoffs should be allowed.  They’re the end of the chain.  You can read more here and here.  You can also view about the best summary I’ve encountered here.

Videogames as Art

Speaking of wrong, the argument that videogames are not art is wrong. Now, they may be “bad” art, intended primarily for financial gain at the expense of truth and self-expression. But arguing that they are not art falls apart.
